Baby Essentials

The Only Newborn Essentials List You Actually Need (Skip Everything Else)

Share:

Babies need warmth, food, safety and love. Everything else is optional.

The genuine must-haves

  • Safe sleep space: Moses basket, crib or cot with a firm flat mattress
  • Car seat: if you drive — i-Size (R129)
  • 6-8 bodysuits and sleepsuits
  • Muslins (×6 minimum)
  • Feeding equipment: pump and/or bottles
  • Nappies and wipes
  • Changing mat

What you probably do not need yet

Baby monitor, wipe warmer, baby food processor, nursery furniture, most gadgets. Buy reactively.

💡 Key takeaway: Wait before buying. Your baby will tell you what they need.

For most families, a basic audio monitor is all you need. Room-sharing (baby in your room) for the first 6 months -- as recommended by the Lullaby Trust -- means expensive video monitors are often unnecessary early on.

Around 6-8 of each in sizes 0-3 months and 3-6 months is plenty. Babies go through outfits quickly, but you'll be doing laundry frequently. Avoid buying too much newborn size -- many babies skip it entirely.

Not at all. A changing mat on the floor works perfectly and is actually safer (no fall risk). Many parents change on a waterproof mat on any flat surface. Save the money.
